Relay for Life

Situation.

Relay for Life has become one of the most recognizable fund raising events in the country. This was not the case when the Forsyth County chapter of the American Cancer Society (ACS) in Winston-Salem, NC, was challenged to present the event for the first time. Also, rallying support for the event in the hometown of RJReynolds presented some interesting issues.

Solution.

Ed Camp, our head counselor, took on the task of chairing the event. He knew star power was needed for the program. Dr. Maya Angelou agreed to donate her time as an active participant, which included honoring cancer survivors with a stirring reading of her classic poem, "And Still I Rise." She helped garner public support and added exactly the credibility the event needed. Other sponsors provided their support after hearing of Dr. Angelou's participation, and the volunteer base gained great energy from the excitement.

Results.

Relay for Life exceeded the fundraising goal of $50,000 by nearly 20%. The state organization of ACS cited the event for its excellence in concept, design and implementation. More importantly, all those involved left feeling uplifted, honored and hopeful. Ed Camp received recognition from the state organization, and was recognized as Volunteer of the Year.
